Update on Updates
September 23, 2010 at 3:04 AM
I've seen all your questions around the planned Android 2.1 update of the current XPERIA range. I really hear your eagerness and thirst for more information – and of course the update itself.
We have earlier given some information on what to expect from this update and said that the roll-out was planned to start late Q3.
The plan for the added features and Android 2.1 step-up still holds but unfortunately we need a couple of more weeks before we are ready to start the roll-out.
The revised plan is to start the roll-out from end of October and onwards.
We are of course not happy about the change of launch timing but we have had to spend some additional time on the software to really makes sure we roll-out with the right quality and user experience.
When it comes to what to expect from the updated software all three X10 models will be updated to Android 2.1 and the Xperia X10 will also get HD video recording with continuous auto focus among many other things.
The key changes for the different products are the following:
Xperia X10:
  • HD video recording with continuous auto-focus for high quality videos
  • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
  • New back up and restore application, with extended content back up
  • 5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders
  • Social phonebook which automatically syncs contact pictures from Facebook and shows when your friends are online
Xperia X10 mini and X10 mini pro:
  • Improved Bluetooth functionality with support for sending and receiving pictures, contacts and more
  • New backup and restore application with extended content back up
  • Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book
  • Improved ways of handling pictures, audio, text and numbers in your messages
  • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android platform 2.1
Over the coming weeks we will here on the product blog keep you updated with visual and video examples on what your phone will look like and be able to do after the update!
I'd also like to highlight that the update will be made available in a phased roll-out which means that different "kits" get the update at different times. It will take some additional weeks from end of October before all different kits have the new software available.
What we mean by a "kit" is a different configuration, i.e. colour of the phone, bundled accessories but most importantly in this case different software configurations.
The difference in software between different kits is mainly related to included languages, settings, applications etc – all this to comply with different legal and operator requirements.
A software upgrade roll-out is similar to a normal product launch, i.e. we roll out the products in a phased manner as the kits are completed. This is due to global and local type approvals and network testing and the same apply for a software upgrade.
From the end of October you will be able to follow availability of the new software on a market by market basis here on the blog.
I will keep you posted with more information and details as we go along.

New Perfume Oil Bottles

For now, we are just trying these awesome new perfume bottles out with our new fragrance, Poison Apple. (Update: After many email please, we have decided to offer these in all of the scents we offer... See? We do listen!!) They are adorable standing short at 2 ml, twice the size of our mini vials. They are different because they have a phenolic screw-on top, they don't leak and they are way better than the tiny vials. Why? ... you ask? Because, I don't know about you, but every time I try to open one of those vials, I feel like the whole thing might separate and fly out of my hand. Could be I am just a clutz. I've been known to walk into street signs and the occasional wall. That aside, because that is really not the point here, the glass vials have those flexible stoppers and those get me in trouble. It's like they don't like me.

These shortie bottles are now available on Etsy (we like to start there), we are selling 2 ml glass jars of Poison Apple perfume oil in my etsy shop for only $5. If people show interest, we'll start to sell other perfumes in these bottles. (now we do in the etsy shop)

ps: The Poison Apple fragrance does not last all day. But it is heaven and totally worth five bucks to wear it. It will make you want to wear black and paint your nails dark red.

See how cute?

VEGAN, and cruelty free of course!

Opening Attachments on the Minis
August 20, 2010 at 7:14 AM
Since both X10 mini and X10 mini pro include support for office e-mail through Exchange Active Sync most of my colleagues are using push e-mail in their phones. Unlike the X10 the mini products however don’t have an included document viewer out of the box. Therefore I’ve gotten many questions around which app to download to do that.
There are many available but since I’m in Sweden where we don’t have paid applications on Android Market yet they mostly are limited trials.
However we’ve now made a free alternative available on PlayNow!

The app is the same that is included in the X10 and it’s called “OfficeSuite Viewer”. It’s developed by one of our partners called MobiSystems and more information can be found at their product page for this app. In short it’s an office document viewer that handles the following formats: DOC, DOCX, TXT, XLS, XLSX, CSV, PPT, PPTX, PPS, PPSX and PDF which should cover most needs out there. It is only a viewer though and if you want to be able to create or edit office documents you need to buy their Pro-version which you can find more information on from within the viewer.
You should find the app under the productivity category on PlayNow in your X10 mini or X10 mini pro. Remember that even though the application as such is free of charge it will be a few MB of data to download so make sure you have some kind of data plan with your network operator!
UPDATE: There have been some issues with the app not being available on PlayNow in all countries and there are also customized phones out there that doesn’t include PlayNow. We have a solution for this – MobiSystems have been kind enough to also put it on their site for direct download. So if you can’t download it from PlayNow you can now direct your phones browser to: http://mobisystems.com/se/officesuite/ and download it there. However – for that you need to work you need to enter Settings -> Applications and there enable “Unknown sources”. This could lower your phone security so remember to disable it after the installation is done.
I’ve only tested it briefly yet but it seems to do the trick just fine with the files I’ve tested so far.
So for you out there who have missed the possibility to open and read e-mail attachements on your mini – Please try it out and let me know what you think!
