Update on international Kindle versions of REWORK

A lot of people have been asking us why there isn't an international Kindle version of REWORK. (The REWORK Kindle US Edition is available for $9.99 at Amazon.)

Unfortunately, there's no simple answer to that. The whole international e-book thing is still a bit of a Wild West environment. While Crown Publishing puts the book out here in the US, the foreign language rights for the book have been sold to different local publishers. It's up to each of these individual foreign publishers as to if/when the book comes out on Kindle.

Here's what our translation chief at Crown Publishing had to say on the whole international Kindle sales issue:

The UK publisher, Vermilion has e-book rights in UK & Commonwealth exclusively (in the rest of the World non-exclusively). I'm sure they are planning an e-version of REWORK. I'm copying our contact at Vermilion so she can give us more information about their e-book.

There aren't Kindle editions available in every country, some have different devices or none available at all yet. Also, some of our foreign deals do not grant e-book rights to the publishers as they aren't equipped yet to exploit these rights (like Indonesia for instance).

In general though, these questions by consumers about Kindle availability would be most easily handled if the authors directed people to the publishers in the countries where the book has already sold. They should list these publishers on their website so that people can go directly to the source.

So here's a list of these foreign publishers so anyone who is interested can contact them directly:

We'll keep working to find out more specific information on future release plans for international editions. Thanks for your patience and understanding. And if you contact a foreign publisher and find out relevant information, please let us know by sending an email to rework[at]37signals[dot]com. Thank you.

Assigning Tasks in Highrise

Highrise Tasks are a great way to keep track of what's on your plate. You can also assign tasks to other people on your team. To do that, select a user’s name from the “Who’s responsible” pulldown menu.

Who's responsible

That person will now be assigned that task. They will also get an email letting them know the task was assigned to them.

To see the tasks you’ve assigned other people, click on the Tasks tab then click on the “Assigned” link.

Assigned link

You’ll then see a list of all the open tasks you’ve assigned other people. (Note: If someone checked off the task and marked it done, you won’t see it.)

REWORK: A different kind of business book (now in stores)

New in Backpack: SMS events to your calendar (experimental)

Last night we rolled out an experimental new feature for the Backpack Calendar. If you have a Plus or higher account, you can now SMS events to your Backpack Calendar. If all goes well we expect to roll this out to other paying plans down the road.

How does it work?

Click the Calendar tab at the top of your Backpack account, and then look in the sidebar below your calendar list. You'll see an SMS icon with a link. It'll look something like this:

Sms-start

When you click the link, you'll see a screen that looks something like this:

Sms-pin

This screen display your code (unique for everyone - don't use the one you see in this example screenshot) and a phone number. Text this code to the phone number using your mobile phone. This will registered your phone number with your Backpack calendar.

You'll then get a confirmation back on your phone saying everything is set up, or that there was a problem.

Adding events to your calendar

You can add events to your calendar via SMS using the same formatting as you use on the web. For example, SMSing "April 23 3pm Dentist" will add a "Dentist" event to your calendar at 3pm on April 23. Or "9am Client meeting" will add an "Client meeting" event to your calendar today at 9am. Or "1pm tomorrow Fedex the contract" will add a "Fedex the contract" event at 1pm tomorrow.

Seeing your schedule via SMS

Here's something else really useful: You can ask your calendar what your schedule looks like via SMS. If you just SMS "Tomorrow" Backpack will SMS tomorrow's schedule back to you. Or SMS "April 7" and you'll get back your schedule for April 7. It's that easy.

The whole thing in action

Here's a screenshot from the SMS app on the iPhone 1. showing the setup confirmation, 2. checking the schedule for tomorrow and April 7, and 3. adding a dentist appointment at 3pm on April 23rd.

Full-phone-sms-example

So there you have it! Again, this is Plus and higher only at this point. If all goes well we'll roll it out to all paid accounts down the road. Thanks again for using Backpack>.

How WooThemes uses Basecamp for internal management and interacting with outside collaborators

WooThemes provides WordPress themes for all types of web publishers. The team there recently posted "Behind-the-Scenes: How we use Basecamp."

Before I get into the nitty-gritty of our Basecamp-usage, I need to explain why we use the platform… For obvious reasons, we're trying to eliminate unnecessary e-mails (those where everyone needs to be CC'ed) between team members; so with Basecamp the information is accessible to everyone that might need to see it, but only the people that need the info to act upon it, get notified. The whole team thus knows what's going on (with Basecamp acting as a status report of kinds) and they have the option of checking in on this any time they want or need to (not when they're e-mailed unnecessarily).

The second main reason for using Basecamp (over e-mail), is the fact that all of our most important data, decisions & discussions are kept in one, central place. This is important, considering our geographical differences, as well as helping us when we're not at our normal workplace (i.e. traveling). We've also found that this is great for accountability & efficiency in making sure that all to-do's are handled in due time & as planned...

Basecamp is an integral part of the way we operate and whilst I wouldn't go as far as saying that we'd be lost without it; we'd definitely not be able to run as smoothly as we do without it.

Read the full piece for more details on how WooThemes uses Basecamp for internal management and interacting with outside collaborators.

WooThemes

WooThemes: "When you're doing WordPress development day-in, day-out, it becomes difficult to see the holistic view of all the activities, but with proper milestones, we are constantly reminded of upcoming stuff."

Satio Software Update

Satio Software Update

The next software update for Satio is now just around the corner. Timing on the update is however different for different markets and operator branded versions. The first ones should start to come up this weekend and then continue over the coming week. However it might differ slightly between markets as some kits might need approval from operators and can therefore take some more time, still I would expect most versions of Satio to have the new software available in latest a few weeks from now.

The update will be available through the Update Service client found at www.sonyericsson.com/update

A software update is important from many perspectives, of course it should rectify some issues, optimize performance even further etc but for this case I’m glad to announce that it will also add and improve some features.

Here’s the list of highlights:

  • Support for WVGA video recording – The already great video recording will be enhanced to fit the wide screen format and hence resolution is also slightly increased to 864 * 480 pixles. (the preset size will still be VGA, user has to change to get WVGA)
  • Upload of pictures to Facebook – It will be possible to upload pictures directly from the picture menu you have on the home screen or from the Media UI.
  • Youtube video uploading – It will be possible to upload videos to Youtube directly from the Media UI.
  • Conversational messaging – "Conversations" will be nicely integrated in the messaging menu in order to easily find and inspire to more conversations with your friends.
  • DLNA support – The new software will support DLNA media server for easy transfer of audio and still pictures. (Note that video is not supported)
  • UI improvements – On top of above, several minor UI improvements have been done in order to optimize the user experience.
  • The Facebook application that is now available on PlayNow for free download will be included in the sw.

So in a few days time I think that at least many of you will be able to try this new update out. Please let us know how it turns out in the comments section.

Have a great weekend all!

Tutorial – Online Video Services in XPERIA X10
February 26, 2010 at 5:14 AM

The huge 4 inch screen of XPERIA X10 of course is great for watching video. It’s both big enough to make it comfortable and has really high resolution to show all details. In the short tutorial here I show two different video services live in the X10. The first one is the SVT-play service offered on the mobile web page of Swedish public service TV - SVT. The other service shown is the included YouTube client. In that client there is an important option to really experience video in the best way, the option is to “Watch in high quality” which really makes a huge difference compared to the normal mobile service offered by YouTube.

Of course there are lots of other services out there besides these two, both local and global but at least it should give you an idea on what to expect from the screen and the video decoding and streaming capabilities. In my opinion it looks great!

As always please remember that these demos are on prototype hardware and pre-releae software so things might change until release.

The video below is unedited and shot with the Sony Ericsson Vivaz so it also gives you a feel for the 720 HD recording offered there! (remember to click “watch on Youtube and select 720p to see it in full quality)
