Home Screen and HD video in the X10 Update

Now I’ve shot some videos of the pre-release software update that I have in my XPERIA X10. This is not the final release but we are really close to releasing the final candidates into external and operator testing and approval now. When that testing is ready and the candidates gets approved the roll-out will start. The current plan still holds to start the roll-out towards the end of October and onwards. (As mentioned earlier the roll-out is done gradually though so it will take some time before all different versions get the update.)
In these videos I try to show you both what the updated home screen looks like and also some results from HD video recording with continuous auto focus.
Remember that even though we are close to a final candidate this still is pre-release software so there might still be small changes and optimizations made before commercial release.
First video out is a short clip showing the home screen that now has 5 panes and some other nice additions such as 5 rows of icons instead of 4. I also show some new widgets that come with the update.

I also made these two videos to show the HD video result. The first one shows a more real life use case where I move the phone from filming a far away object to a much closer one.

In this second video I instead kept the X10 on the tripod and introduce a close object into the scene. This is more of a stress test and it does struggle a little bit in the first attempt but is much quicker in the second one.

There have been more requests from you on what you want me to show and I am working on it. If you have more requests just let me know in the comments section!

XPERIA X8 and Cedar Now Shipping

Two new products have now started to hit the shelves of stores around the world.
First out is the XPERIA X8 which is the new addition to our family of Android based phones. The key selling point of the X8 is of course it’s very nice form factor sitting right in between the X10 mini and the big X10 in size. It gives a bit bigger screen than X10 mini but does have a step-down in e.g. Camera (3.2MP Fix focus) which makes it the most affordable Sony Ericsson Android phone ever. This is of course a nice thing when it comes to even further broadening the target group for Android smartphones.
Even though XPERIA X8 will be our most affordable Android smartphone so far there’s no compromise compared to the X10 range when it comes to connectivity (still 3G and Wifi) or application access (actually more applications available than the minis because of the higher resolution screen). It also has GPS, Google maps etc and also the 4 corner UI from the mini products. It’s kind of like the Android smartphone made easy!
Since much of the discussions here are about the forthcoming Android update I’d also like to make clear that also X8 is Android 1.6 from launch and will get the planned Android 2.1 update later this year. Final timing is not fully set yet but I expect it to be a bit later than for the X10 family.
When it comes to Cedar™ it’s our latest addition to the GreenHeart family of phones.
Also Cedar goes onto the lines of being the most affordable alternative and really is for consumers looking for an easy way to stay connected at an affordable price. It’s built on our own operating system as used in most of our feature phones such as W995, Elm, Hazel etc. It has all those things that are essential to most people such as a very comfortable keypad, calendar, messaging, email and more. On top of that it also features a desktop widget with support for Facebook, Twitter, MySpace etc connectivity and also Exchange Active Sync for corporate email, calendar and contact access etc. So even though it is a very affordable phone it really has most of the functionality of its bigger siblings Elm and Hazel.
On top of that it is a GreenHeart phone and in the case of Cedar the GreenHeart attributes applied are:
  •           High efficiency charger with minimal standby loss.
  •           Minimized box size and packaging material
  •           Made out of recycled plastics
  •           Painted with waterborne paint
  •           E-manual to minimize the amount of paper in the box
  •           "Eco-inspiring" applications such as EcoMate and GreenCalculator
  •           PC software included automically on the phone instead of supplied on CD
More information on our GreenHeart initiative can be found on our GreenHeart Blog!
Finally here’s a short video that Albin and Amalia made on the XPERIA X8!

Product Launch

Sony Ericsson LiveView™

This morning my friends over at our Extras department announced a new very cool accessory.
It’s called the Sony Ericsson LiveView™ and is kind of a new thing altogether so not that easy to describe, perhaps this video that Albin and Marcus put together does it best :-)

What is does is that is sits on your wrist (with an included wrist band) or as a clip somewhere and gives you a quick view of what’s going on in your phone. Like a second wireless interactive mini display. This means that you can have your phone in you pocket or in a bag and still be alerted with notifications on incoming stuff or keept track of other things. It has an OLED screen with 128×128 pixels and some interaction elements such as 4-way navigation (touch sensors at the front, just at the edges of the screen) and two hard buttons, one for power on and off and for menu selection.
There are some given use-cases included already from launch, like notifications on incoming calls and messages, Facebook status updates etc. The cool thing however is of course that this device is available for use by any application that wants to. Think of this as kind of the usual Android desktop widgets but instead in a physical form, away from your phone. This makes this device quite an enabler for lots of cool ideas going forward. As you are aware there are thousands of great Android apps out there and I’m sure many of them could improve and evelove by use this device in cool ways. Then there might also even be some new applications ideas that are possible to realise now with this device that wasn’t even possible without it.
It will be sold as a stand alone device and start selling in around the same timeframe as our X10 products are updated (it needs Android 2.x to work). It will also be sold in different packages from us and from our partners. The currently finalised example is an “Experience Pack” with LiveView, a sporty style armband for having your phone on your arm and the SportyPal™ Pro application from CreationPal.
So – how does it work?!
It’s basically like an Android desktop widget but in physical form and its controlled over Bluetooth from an application in your phone called LiveView™ Application. This application will be available for download from Android Market and after it’s installed other 3rd party application can through different APIs plug into that and make use of the LiveView™ device. In the LiveView™ Application on your phone you can also scan Android Market for LiveView™ enabled applications to find more cool stuff to download. More information for developers such as documentation, APIs etc will be made available at our Developer World web site.
